Abstract Title:Prominent Factors for Nurses Job Dissatisfaction in Ethiopia.

Biography:

Dr. Meaza Getahun Sileshi completed PhD in Public Health from University of South Africa, Pretoria. She also studied MSc degree in Adult Health Nursing from Addis Ababa University and BSc degree in nursing from Jimma University, Ethiopia. She was academician in Jimma University, St Paul hospital millennium medical college and Research and Development Dean in Nordic Medical Centre in Ethiopia. Also, she served international NGOs as technical advisor and resource person, i.e. Jhpiego, Intra-Health International and Project Hope. Currently she is post-doctoral fellow at department of Nursing and Midwifery in Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa.

Research Interest:

Nurses might experience job dissatisfaction related to various factors in the work environment and leads to inadequate performance, lowers productivity, and higher rate of turnover. This study aimed to investigate factors that cause job dissatisfaction among nurses working at Empress Zewditu Memorial Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on July 2022 at Zewditu Memorial Hospital using simple random sampling method to select nurses and then data was analyzed using SPSS version 28.0. A total of 101 nurses responded for self-administered questionnaire. More than half of the respondents were female (59.4%) and in the range of 21-35 years of age (51.5%). The cumulative dissatisfaction rate of these nurses was nearly 65.83% and they mentioned various responsible factors for such feelings. Some of the main reasons for their job dissatisfaction were related to unattractive salary and incentives, long hours of work schedule, lack of recognition by higher leaderships, comparatively a heavy workload at their current workplaces and doubting on the workplace safety 86.2%, 83.1%, 74.3%, 72.2%, and 44.5% respectively. Job dissatisfaction is highly associated with work experience of more than five years (48.5%), and work rotation hours of 8-12 hours (9.9%).

 

As job related dissatisfaction crucial matter for nurses, as it affects quality of care and standards of practice. So, it is highly recommended to examine and act on alleviating the deep-rooted causes.
