Research Interest:
Background The goal of nursing education is to promote the application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice. Problem The goal of this project was to find out more about students’ attitudes toward the care of patients who are dying and their families. Approach A descriptive, quantitative design was utilized using the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying (FATCOD) Scale B. Students viewed an extended reality (XR) simulation that was recorded using 360° video. The simulation featured a dying patient and their family member. Students completed the FATCOD before and after viewing the XR simulation. Outcomes A paired t-test demonstrated a significant difference in scores noted at p=0.5. A paired t-test demonstrated a statistical significance after students viewed the XR simulation. Conclusion The goal of implementing an XR simulation that exposes a younger and less experienced student nurse to death and dying may foster more positive attitudes in caring for dying patients and their families.
