Research Interest:

Acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) is a rare but severe respiratory condition characterized by rapid onset and life-threatening symptoms. Despite its critical nature, the identification of risk factors remains underexplored. This scoping review aimed to examine the literature on AEP risk factors published between 1990 and 2024 to identify general study characteristics, key risk factors, and trends. The study utilized Arksey and O'Malley’s scoping review framework, analyzing 17 studies from eight databases. Findings revealed 47 risk factors categorized as behavioral, physiological, demographic, environmental, medical, and other factors. Behavioral risk factors, particularly smoking habits, were the most frequently identified, with new or resumed smoking strongly associated with AEP. Demographic factors highlighted younger males and older individuals on specific medications as at-risk groups. Environmental factors such as seasonal temperature changes and occupational exposures were also significant triggers. Medical risk factors included conditions like allergic diathesis and drug use, with daptomycin prominently linked to AEP. The review underscores the critical role of nurses in preventive strategies, including smoking cessation interventions, environmental exposure management, and patient education on medication risks. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies, larger sample sizes, and the integration of nursing perspectives to enhance understanding and prevention of AEP. These findings provide a foundation for targeted nursing interventions and contribute to evidence-based practices for managing this complex condition.
